Book Review: Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Summary: In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other — but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, one in a long line of Shadowhunters tasked with protecting the world from demons. With her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of an secret Los Angeles where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries start turning up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were murdered years ago, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge — and Julian’s chance to get back his half-faerie brother, Mark, who was kidnapped five years ago. All Emma, Mark and Julian have to do  is solve the murders within two weeks . . . before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. As she uncovers the past, she begins to peel away the secrets of the present: What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents — and can she bear to know the truth?

Review: Can Cassandra Clare write anything that is terrible? In my opinion the answer is no.

This book had my thoughts and emotions running all over the place, so much so, I was even thinking about it when I wasn't reading it. Safe to say, I was a complete mess during and by the end I was hungover. This book is so unique and refreshing compared to the other Shadowhunter series.

For me, Lady Midnight easily sits at the top of my best read of 2016. I think it's partly because we have waited so long for this series to manifest into our hands, and the world of Shadowhunters is so fascinating and exciting. The laws in which Cassie has thought up in which these half angel, half mundane have to live by, throughout their, somewhat short lives really intrigues me. I love the idea of forbidden love between  Parabatai, which is the one of the main focus in the book. Emma and Julian, oh my goodness. I don't want to spoil it, if you haven't read it. All I'm going to say is that, things get steamy and tense.

Cassandra's story writing has grown and developed to impeccable standards with every book. With  Lady Midnight, I felt as if I knew more about the characters. How the Blackthorn family and Emma worked and interacted with each other. I felt as if I personally knew them. In fact, all the characters were written so well and fitted perfectly within the story.

Another thing about Lady Midnight compared to the other series is the use of 'mundane' technology. In past books you didn't really see technology, because Shadowhunters are forbidden to dabble in things us humans use ie, iPhones, earphones, computers and the list goes on. So it was so refreshing to learn that the Blackthorns and Emma didn't really care about the 'law' on that and rebelled, which I personally see as the start of something big like, Shadowhunters rebel against their government, a revolution maybe? on Shadowhunter law. I'm thinking outside the box and may have it all wrong.

Needless to say, I was instantly sucked in and lost in my own imagination reading this. It has defiantly got me wanting more and looking forward to the second book, out 2017

Overall I give this 5 out of 5 stars. Go and Read it!!!

  1. Oh my god I love this book so much! Just everything was so perfect! Completely agree about Julian and Emma's romance, it was so lovely and refreshing as we've never seen parabatai in love before... (When Alec thought he was in love with Jace doesn't count hahaha) I'm so excited for the next book, I literally cannot wait until 2017!!
